Donnie Darko, is there anything to 'get'?

SPOILER

So at the end... he just decided to go back in time to die right? He did it on purpose so that his gf wouldn't die. Or is it deeper than that?

The storm is the portal and the engine from the plane is the 'artifact' that causes the disturbance that causes the loop in time?

Try reading the wiki for the movie. It gives a little insight into it.

When the artifact entered the original world, it created a new, short-lived universe that needed to be close, or it would result in the destruction of both universes. To close it, Donnie needed to create an incident in which he would be placed back in time to where the artifact originally appeared in the first universe. There are several other things though, but I feel like it is more of a movie that is "look at it as however you like."

How does he 'create' that incident? The last scene was not done by him on purpose.

He figures out how to do it from Granny Death's Book. Since he did not die in the original loop and that is when he first sees Frank, he knows where and when to go back to

It sort of was. It was suggested in the Wiki that Donnie has superhuman powers because of the position that he was placed in. He is able to rip the airplane engine off (through telekinesis) and guide it through the time portal, as well as guiding himself back to the appropriate time.

it's a weird movie, but basically he had to go back in time and die so that the universe would be saved.

I saw it with a few friends in highschool when it came out. After it was over we all just sat around for 10 minutes in basic silence just looking at each other.

Snort, that's called lack of experience. The level of self absorption in that pos should have been quite familiar to most highschoolers though.:)

Good movie or not, the soundtrack is the BEST EVER. Don't even argue that it isn't. I won't listen.

Yeah, I've since recognized the movie for what it is. A psuedo-intellectual mental masturbatory movie.
I still love it, but it's not as reality shattering as it first appeared to be in highschool.

I need to see it a few more times, but the first time through was simply amazing

long story short he had to give the jet engine a reason to exist to keep the universe from going *poof*.
