Donnie darko ending....? (spoilers)

ive watched the movie two times now and I think some friends and I came up with an idea about the ending.....

At the end after donnie gets hit by the engine and everyone wakes up ....we thought that everyone saw what happened or had a general idea of the future or what could have been the future.... like frank when the camera pans across him he reaches up and touches the eye that he got shot in...
(but then why did we not see gretchen after donnie got hit by the engine when they were going across all the people)

so anyone who has heard the commentary off the dvd is that right?
