didn't watch the replay, didn't want to be influenced by the facts, didn't want to 'throw kids under the bus' etc etc. what a dumb b!tch. this is the third time in the last year that The U has shown that they're just a bunch of thugs with no respect for the game or their opponents. of course, the alumni are probably happy because a) if coker wasn't going to be fired before, he sure as hell is now (unless b happens); b) the team gets fired up and might win all their conference games and show up in a BCS game (and this is a miami team that should have lost to houston); and c) the alums are all thugs too.

Miami's Faculty Senate didnt have a problem with Donna Shala's response, which is even more appalling.

 
I love the fact that she now instituted a 'no tolerance' policy for violence from their school athletes but she is not enforcing it for this incident. Their defensive captain was shown on the video stomping other people with his cleats and he only gets a ONE game suspension? That is ridiculous. You can see people in the video bashing other people with their helmets, stomping other plays, and generally being completely out of line. The whole incident was a disgrace to college football and those performing the majority of the unacceptable behavior should be suspended for at least the rest of the season.

She did an interview on ESPN earlier this week when she admitted that she did not even watch the video. Her staff watched it and handled it, but she admitted she hadn't personally seen it. Reading accounts of the video does not do it justice until you can actually see how disgraceful their behavior was. She should be ashamed of her university and how poorly they managed this whole situation.
 
I think it's disgraceful, but it's certainly clear to the world what the priority is at the University of Miami.

Yeah, while I (as an FSU grad) think "the brawl" was overblown, I can't believe she wouldn't at least watch it to see what it was all about. The helmet swinger should be dismissed from school, otherwise it was just a fight.

Any other collegiate sport and those players would have been done for the season. Its pretty sad when a lower university does the right thing(FIU) and the bigger one just thumbs is nose to reason. Another big issue is Miami has been involved in three bench clearing on the field scuffles in the past 18 months. Thug U indeed.

On another note it sucks to be Miami freshmen, 7 of them lost their redshirts today, and they likely wont play another game this season.

The absolutely priceless comment was from one of ESPN's commentators during halftime of the Texas/Nebraska game, 'She didn't want to be influenced by the facts. Well, that's America these days.'
 
Get off her back. She was put in a position she should not have been. She has to stand up there making a decision where on one hand the general public wants everyone kicked off the team, and on the other hand the money-backing alumns want winning football. The decision should have been made by the NCAA. You don't see individual teams in the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. suspensing players after brawls, it's the league offices that do it. So why not have the NCAA make the rulings here? Why do they force the decision onto someone who cannot possibly please everyone she has to answer to. It's that old situation where you cannot please everyone, so you try and compromise in the middle, and now no one is happy.

Because they are unprofessional kids playing to get into the pros. The college president has sole authority of their athletic department. Since the kids aren't paid, the overseeing body (ultimately, it lands at her doorstep) needs to have some accountability. She has absolutely 0 and the "I don't want to be swayed by the facts" comment shows her real fortitude.

Her responsibility to the University as a whole is more important than her responsibility to the boosters. At least it should be. Part of the university's health is its image to the public.

There are high school kids out there right now thinking about what universities they want to apply to for academics. Seeing the head of the university take a "hear no evil, see no evil" approach makes the university's administration look incompetent and/or spineless.
