Kind of recently I updated my catalyst driver to 6.4. Well I decided to uninstall the previous version and install 6.4. It turned out to be a mistake, because it royaly screwed up my computer. So I found 6.3 installed that and then installed 6.4 over 6.3. My computer was still really messed up. I went to an even older version and installed 6.4 over that. It worked fine.

Now I want to install the the Catalyst driver (6.5). Should I uninstall 6.4 first or just install 6.5 over 6.4? My friend says to install the new one without uninstalling the old drivers. However ATI's site says, "The Catalyst Uninstaller is an optional download. We recommend using this utility to uninstall any previously installed Catalyst drivers prior to installation."

Also should I really install that AVIVO Video Converter Engine or just leave it out? I don't know exactly what it does, but will it help me view video files better or something?

I regularly upgrade my Catalyst drivers - just finished going from 6.4 to 6.5. I always remove all of the exisiting ATI drivers using XP's "add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel. Once it does that, I manually delete all of the folder that the previous version was in. Then, the system is running with standard XP drivers, and I install the new Catalyst. Never a problem that way. It always takes a couple of reboots to regain all the correct settings.

The other thing I do is ignore the Catalyst Control Center (CCC.) I find it too bloated, layered and clumsy. I leave in the old tried and true Catalyst Control Panel, and it works perfectly with the new drivers every time. But - some folks like the CCC because it is more "gee whiz!." 🙂

As for AVIVO - I have no need for that. All my video needs are handled nicely by WMP11.

I ran that uninstall all ATI program file and rebooted. Then I installed the new drivers. Everything still works fine so that's a plus. 🙂
