It maybe against the licensing terms or whatever, but I beleive patches and modifications to software is protected item and not a violation of real law.
 
editing closed source binaries that you agree to (in the EULA) to not modify.

to the OP, a good idea would be to use an open source alternative. MythTV on linux is incredibly powerfull.
