Ok, I'm trying to connect to my computer using the host WinXP Pro, of course, and my remote terminal, using WinXP Home.

Ok, I have my administrative account and password.
So, this is what I have been doing.

If I'm in the same network, set up with a router, I'm trying to use the Remote Desktop with this settings:

Computer: (the name of my computer as it appears in systems properties)

User name: (my adminstrative account user name)

Password: (my adminstrative account password)

Domain: (the address assigned to my computer by the router)

Ok, that doesn't work, what am I doing wrong?

I'm going to try using the computer from another place tomorrow to see if it coneccts from some other IP address, but I have a question there.

If I use the same set up as above, like so:

Computer: (the name of my computer as it appears in systems properties)

User name: (my adminstrative account user name)

Password: (my adminstrative account password)

Domain: (the address assigned to my computer by the router)

What do I need to set up the Domain as?
Since I have a DSL connection through the internet, do I need to set up the Domain with the DSL IP address that it gives to my router?
Can some one help me there.

Domain is not the IP address assigned to you by the router. To connect to the computer within the same LAN, all you need is the IP of the computer.

Start -> Run -> MSTSC

type in the IP of the host. Don't even bother expanding the Options>> button.

once connected, enter your username and password.

Thank you very much, I just tried it and it works like a charm.
But now, I'm going to try to connect from work tomorrow, what do I need to do in order to get connected from another place?
Since I wont be in the same network, same LAN.

You'll need to setup port forwarding from your router. And you'll need to keep track of your IP address (hopefully if it's not static, it at least lasts a while before refreshing). I believe you could use a service like dyndns to solve the latter problem; a small application running on your home pc would update dyndns every so often, so when you use ElGuache.dyndns.org it would point to the correct IP Address.

I'm using a Dlink Router that automatically updates dyndns.org so that my hostname always points to my IP address and allows me to remotely connect. Keep in mind however, that remote desktop doesn't work well on anything but fast broadband. Try it on a so-so 802.11b connection and you'll see what i mean.

Oh yeah, and fwd port 3389. I think that's it.

Thanks, I have a D-link router, I'll try to do that tonight so that I can test it tomorrow.

I already registered with dyndns.org, but how do I make my D-link router to send my IP address to my account?

Edit:

I was checking my IP, and it hasn't change in two days, so I think is not static.
So I guess I don't need a dyndns.org account to do this.

Now, the only thing that I don't know is how to setup a port forwarding from my router.
Is this the same thing as creating a Virutal Server?
Because I have that in my DI-524 D-link router, I just need to know a litle bit more of information in how to set it up.

Can some one help me there?

I have a DI-604, so keep in mind the option names may be different:

1. Open your config webpage (by default on D-Links, this is http://192.168.0.1
2. Log in as the admin account.
3. Click WAN on the vertical left column.
4. Click the Advanced tab on the top. You should now be in the Virtual Server options.
5. Fill in the fields for a new service:

Name: (whatever you want, mine is called Remote Desktop)
Private IP: LAN IP of your computer
Protocol: TCP
Private Port: 3389
Public Port: 3389
Schedule: Always

6. Click Apply.
7. After the page refreshes, if your new service is not checked in the list below, click the pencil/paper icon to edit it, then click Enabled at the very top of this page and click Apply again.

If you have multiple computers you want to connect remotely to, simply change the registry key to have the computer listen on a different port, and make a new service substituting the new Private/Public ports. Access your port 3389 Remote Desktop by typing in your public IP (http://www.whatismyip.com), or yourIP:(new port) for secondary connections.

a static IP means it DOESN'T change. That means if you're on vacation you can access your PC with the same IP since you know it'll be the same. Most DSL and Cable connections are semi-static, meaning they stay the same sometimes for months at a time, but will occasionally change without warning. In this case, a dynamic DNS works great. I have a hostname that ALWAYS resolves to my IP address. So I go to remote desktop and type my hostname in and i know i'll always be able to connect.

The DLink routers have a section in their GUI to setup a DynDNS. Should be in "tools | Misc" i think. They have directions on their website.
