Stupid. Well, I just lost any shred of respect I had for pudge. That really makes sense though; go to the worst team in the mlb just so you can have a few more bucks that you can't spend. Hope getting your face beat in 100 or so times next season will be worth it.

"How do you sleep at night?"

"On a large pile of money with many beautiful ladies."

Guess Pudge's money pile wasn't quite big enough.

Anyone who doesn't believe that to 90% of athletes, sports is about the money, is insanely naive.

Sure they love playing, but if the teams don't pony up the cash, they're gone. Of course there are exceptions, but not many.

What did the Marlins offer him, for next year 1yr for 10 million. He got an extra 30 million I really can't fault him for taking the extra money. Now if he starts to whine about losing, well he did play in Texas for a long time so he should be used to it.

Because it's a sport. As sports fans, some of us like to think the players we're paying asinine sums of money to see actually care about winning. Players like Pudge prove us wrong time and time again however. Some of them actually do though. Look at Karl and GP for example. They took a crapload less money to chase a ring because they're not myopics like Pudge and they realize they already have more money than they can spend. That's what's nice to see. Someone who cares more about winning than they do a few mil which will be essentially meaningless to them.

Well, isn't Payton and Malone going to retire after this season? I thought them leaving their team to join a championship team was just being on a bandwagon to easy championship. Malone doesn't have much to offer anymore anyways. They both made enough money to take the minimum.

I also have lost all respect for him.. I had a lot for him, now its all gone. WHY WOULD ANYBODY LEAVE A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM FOR A FEW EXTRA BUCKS? It's not like the Marlins treated him bad, and tried to take advantage of him. Man, what a chump.

And people like Alber Pujols who took small pay last year so that the Cardinal's could pick up some extra players. Cause he's all about winning.

Pudge wanted a long term contract. The only ones really offering him a long term contract was Detriot. Its more about years, than it is about money.

I thought Florida offered him three years? You're not going to get much more when you're an aging catcher who's spent that much time behind the plate. Besides, Scott Boras is his agent which means it's money and nothing else.

Marlins offered in 3 year, 24 million dollar contract and play for the defending champs.

Tigers offered him 4 year, 40 million dollar contract and the chance to play for the worst team in the league where he won't be recognized.

Ok, for the record, that's what Pujols was making to begin with. It isn't like he said "well guys I'll make this amount this year so you can sign people", that was just his salary. NOW he wants a long-term deal and if you don't think that he wants big bucks, I reiterate my earlier point, you are very naive.

Pudge became a mercenary this weekend.

Not only did he chase the money, but he left his family behind. He left the warm weather for the cold of Detriot. 3 years, $24 million was more than fair. Especially from this ballclub (a cash-strapped team). They already lost Derrick Lee to Chicago. Now they lose Pudge.

He screwed himself IMO. He won't be nearly as happy.
