Need suggestions for making cash donations. So far, we've only given to NPR. Other than the usual charities such as the Red Cross and United Way, what are some other good causes? I'm thinking maybe www.SmileTrain.org

Cut out the middle man, give it to the people you see needed it most, people that you see daily. Go to a shelter, mission, etc...

what about just give the cash to a random homeless person? you are talking about 5 bux, no need to get complicated. Best part, no admin overhead.

Local humane society and other animal charities seem like good ideas. I'd rather not be handing out cash to random homeless. Besides, I doubt they'll give be a receipt :p

theres probably a few charities in your local neighborhood that could use the donation. here there are st vincent de paul an a few others like it that help the homeless, the humane society to help aminals an a number of other choices that i could actually watch the benefit of my donation. look around your neighborhood.

With Child's Play you know exactly where your money is going -- children's hospitals. If you use the Amazon shopping links you can even pick a local hospital and choose the books, toys or games for the kids to share. (See sig - last day!)

Besides them, I give to the Seattle Times Fund (a better united way for Washington charities) and Northwest Harvest which supplies food banks in Washington state.

What do you need a receipt for? Charity is about helping people (or animals), not what you get in return.

Heh, I'm only 42% altruistic, and I need to reduce my taxes this year.

I don't know why I read the title as $5 as opposed to $$. that explains my comment a little bit.

United Way is good, you can say where you want your donation to go, and some employers match your donation.

donate locally if you can. local food pantries can always use help.

You need to itemize for it to be of any benefit other than a warm fuzzy.
