3dmark 11 results can favor AMD more than real world gaming. In games the 7970 is only 11% on average faster than gtx580 in DX11 mode and 2% faster in DX9 /DX10 mode.

This puts the 7950 on par with the gtx580 in real world performance at best.

Hmm, really? That's not what this says:

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/12/22/amd_radeon_hd_7970_video_card_review/14

Stock 7970 vs Factory OCed GTX580: 9-29% faster among 5 modern games for a single display, and 16-38% faster for eyefinity in same tests.

When overclocking the 7970 (still at stock voltages), they came up with this:

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/01/09/amd_radeon_hd_7970_overclocking_performance_review/7

Which increased its lead over the factory OCed GTX580 to anywhere from 33-62%.

Maybe they got a great OCer, but either way it's pretty compelling evidence that the 7970 is faster than the 580. If not, there are a lot of foolish people overpaying for 7970s considering what a 580 can be had for.

It seems very odd that AMD left so much performance on the table for the 7970. Makes me think the rumors about the 8xxx series arriving in 3Q (or so) are very true. Lots of possibilities here for AMD.

Perhaps the strategy of increasing performance with driver updates when nvidia does bring out it's new hardware will come into play? I could see that happening along with an AMD price drop to help make the 7970 look competitive again if nvidias new offering kicks it's butt performance-wise.
The 7950 looks like a good card and fits right into line in the grand scheme of things.

The problem is Anandtech and Pcperspective also had mediocre results from the 7970 we already discarded them in favor of results from [H]. Isn't that some form of cherry picking as well?

I certainly never did. There are way more than 4 review sites in the world. If you're choosing a card you SHOULD read as many reviews as time allows. Fine you may like one review site over another but you heed only that one at your peril if you want an overall picture.

Yeah AMD is up to something.... (at the very least, waiting for the maturity of the 28nm process to give better thermals/yields/ect.. for when they decide to ramp up to much higher clockspeeds). They've had the fastest video card for years now. They may be intent on retaining the fastest gpu as well now...

lol at picking one obscure site, ignoring all the other and claiming the the 7970 is only 11% faster than a 580 and calling it mediocre.

So 11% looks like the LOWEST difference between the 2, it can get as high as 40% in some games, that's no even accounting for the 7970 massive OC ability that makes it 50%+ faster across the board.
