In the wake of Robert Mueller's release of key court filings in the Russia probe on Friday, conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin said Sunday that President Donald Trump would pull an unusual last-minute move to protect himself from potential legal action.
“I would predict here on MSNBC that when Trump leaves office he will resign the presidency 10 minutes before Mike Pence leaves office, allowing Pence to pardon him if there is not a Republican president to follow him,” Rubin told the network’s AM Joy program

Rofl...when the conservatives start thinking this way...and I’ll be fine with it...as long as the various states are ready to file charges for “crimes” he’s committed in their jurisdictions. Corruption should carry the death penalty...not a cushy retirement.

Dammit...I can’t edit the end of the title to reflect that this is a prediction from a conservative columnist.Edit...again...got it fixed.

I like the theory where Trump resigns, Pence becomes president and pardons him, then makes Trump VP, then resigns. It's a tidy little circle.

misleading headline, in the sense that this is just a columnist's opinion as opposed to something that is determined to happen (i saw the article earlier in the day and felt clickbaited :p)

while pence technically could pardon, would he actually? would repubs allow it? would people allow it? the political consequences would be massive.

Yup, Ford arguably was not re-elected because of his decision to pardon Nixon. But this would be much worse, particularly if done in the manner suggested by this columnist.

Why 10 minutes not 15 minutes or 30 minutes?

I strongly suspect that, like it always happens, the new president whatever party they may belong to, will not go after or prosecute Trump in any way.

Dems are even now being very tight lipped about the "I" word (perhaps as they should be... there are systemic problems that need fixing that I expect the Dems to address rather than getting pulled into Trump's reality distortion field).

Maybe lead with voting rights/gerrymandering fix so next election will have more validity and less suppression.

Fix the pre-clearance part of the VRA so all states must comply. States which operate in good faith will not have a problem.

The Dems should NOT be talking about impeachment...yet. They don't have the votes in the Senate to convict, even if the House votes to impeach. If they push it through, nothing will happen except Trump's legacy will be slightly tarnished, as Bill Clinton's was...but he'll remain in office until the end of his term...and COULD even get re-elected in 2020 since the Dems can't field a strong enough candidate to beat him.

Fortunately for Trump the extent of his criminal activity is so extensive I don't think Mueller can finish his investigation in time to impeach Trump before the next election and I think it will take his report to initiate impeachment action. I still think whether Trump gets impeached will depend on how badly Republican Senators want to hold on to their seats, those up for the vote in 2020.

Now that would be something to see. In millions of homes across the nation liberals would have to be pealed off the ceilings.

It seems to me that the folks in the know had Trump pegged for the garbage heap the moment Mueller arrived at the scene of the crime(s). From thereon in it was all a matter of milking Trump for everything they could get out of him and then abandon the clueless self-absorbed schmuck the moment he got too toxic to be anywhere near him.

They get everything they wanted and Trump takes the heat for it all.

Who says Pence would pardon him.
Yeah. While politicians tend to protect their own even if they don't agree with them and Trump being jailed reflects badly on the position of President, Pence might well be considering how it's going to make him look politically if he does this plus I'd imagine that he probably detests Trump on lots of levels.

Imho when Prez Trump accused of crime:
1. GOP backs him, they are as bad as Trump
2. GOP dumps him, "we did the right thing in standing behind the POTUS office, but he has to face his personal responsibility" which is a win-win. They no longer have to deal with King Moron, AND they get to paint themselves as the party of justice and law.

Think .. "yes Trump made a mistake but we did not want to weaken AMERICA and so we supported his office (and you dirty Democrats should have done the same.
Now that he's no longer the toddler in chief, you can arrest him".

TLDR Trump is disposable. Disposable Trump.

- Well that's something, cause Trump being President reflects badly on the position of president:p

Pence would pardon Trump if only to save the image of the Pubs.

It does nothing of the sort! The only thing that Trump being jailed reflects badly on, is Trump.

At least he can take comfort in the fact, that Iwanker will be able to give him conjugal visits.

And his voters. They knew he was crooked when they voted for him. Everybody did.

I'm not sure about that. Granted, there are many that knew he was a narcissistic, lecherous, incestuous pedophile,

But I think very few people knew that he was treasonous. He is the best Russian asset since disgraced FBI agent Robert Hanssen.

Indict Trump while in office like Tribe suggests. If Pence pardons Trump after he leaves then Pence is guilty of obstructing justice. Ford got away with it because there was no indictment at the time. Let's prevent that. The only thing that stops this is a memo based on the idea that the president is too busy to be bothered with it. Well he'd have time for an impeachment and trial and he has lots of golf time so that doesn't hold water. Another advantage to indicting now is that there is no applicable statute of limitations concern.

Every legal means needs to be used and there is no illegality or Constitutional prohibition against an indictment and trial of a President, as ugly as that may look.

Just think about this for a second. The guy has done a billion things wrong and they're sticking with him. What makes you think a new thing will come out and they'll change their mind? For love country and constitution? LOL.

If anything this is proof that 1 country doesn't work anymore.

The founding fathers said we give you a republic if you can keep it. Well it's pretty damn obvious that Trumpers don't want a republic. PERIOD.

Not at all. I think the GOP knows full well Trump is garbage, but he's making them win.
As soon as they need to, they will dump him.
They will probably criticize all those things about him that WE criticize now.
