I am divided from white supremacists. I don't need the media to make that decision. I was divided from them when I learned about the KKK in school. I recognized the problem when I read To Kill a Mockingbird. I was saddened to learn that my education covered up the Tulsa massacre and Tuskegee trials until I was in my 30s.

Your attempts to point the finger at those trying to fix the problem is troubling. Your labeling of them as the problem indicates you have some internal shame. If you are okay with racists, why not have the courage to come out and say it?

We all have our own biases. Part of that is human nature from birth, and part of that is nurture from parents, teachers, media, society at large. Nothing wrong with clutching a few pearls at the sight of a dreadlocked teen in a wife beater and baggy pants down around his knees. That isn't racism.

No, true racism is using the institutions of this country to keep a certain set of people down. Denying them FEMA aid. Denying them GI Bill benefits. Denying them USDA loans and driving them off their farms. Appropriating their land without adequate compensation. That's just a start--the private sector can be just as bad if not worse. Steering people into/away from certain neighborhoods. Denying business loans. Denying promotions, tenure or other benefits.

Some people acknowledge these problems exist, and have persisted, and have directly led to some of the ills in our society today. Some people prefer to deny that the problem ever existed, and that any disparities between groups are a result of poor decision making and poor parenting alone. Like I said, it's fine to be biased--but the minute you allow your biases to inform your hiring decisions, your investment decisions, even your votes--well if you choose to perpetuate the system, then you might just be a racist.
