I think it only took me 3 months after getting my license 7 years ago that I turned my dome lights to permanently off and never bothered with it again.

Thoughts? I can understand dome lights at night if you are getting in the backseat of a minivan but all other applications just seems like a good way to bother your dilated eyes.

I applaud you on achieving such a state of nirvana that this is even a going concern in your carefree little head. You, sir, are doing it right.

Back on topic, it would seem to me that automatic is the way to go. It hurts nothing to have the dome light on when I don't need it, and I enjoy having it already on when I do.

WTF do you think you're doing when behind the wheel, raiding an Iraqi oil refinery in total darkness? Having your dome light automatically come on when you open the door (like any normal person) does not spoil your night vision. You're using headlights and street lights and lighted signs and anywhere there's civilization you're passing restaurants and malls and gas stations all of which are also lit up like a Christmas tree. You don't have any night vision for the dome light to mess with.

My dad has kept them off for at least 30 years. His reasoning what if it somehow gets "stuck" on. Ah well, he's earned the right to do what he wants. Who am I to tell him otherwise LOL.

If we disregard the eyes discomfort idea which I admit is minor, I see no reason to have it come on unless there is something that I need to search for in the car.

As long as it's not a harsh blue LED, auto. Which is good, because some of my car's switches are busted :).

If only dome lights actually worked...I'm having a hard time recalling any vehicle ever that had lights worth anything. Even in my brand new 2013 vehicle, I just flipped them off since they were useless. It's no better than trying to use a glow in the dark watch as a flash light.

Wow! What an interesting thread. You know, in the car I have no problem reaching back for another beer or unzipping my pants in the dark but the dome lights in my little Mazda 3 are excellent assistance when rolling up a joint on long night drives. It's a well thought out vehicle so I just leave them set to auto, but, they can be over-ridden with just a light press on the light itself. I really appreciate that the passenger can just turn on their side, or I can just use my side, or both! There is even a little light for whoever is in the trunk. So many fucking options. :|
