domain/web hosting suggestions

After doing some searching here and viewing some suggestions it seems that

the basic plans from NameCheap and E-Rice would seem to fit my needs well enough. totaling ~$20/yr

Anyone have other suggestions/recommendations? The auto-installer and cPanel at AddAction seem pretty cool, but the price is a bit hefty for me (no, I cannot afford $7/mo 🙁 ).

One question: does namecheap have domain aliases? I have a domain with register.com right now (which expires soon) and I can alias ftp.xxxx.net or mail.xxxx.net to whatever IP i'd like, or would I set that up with e-rice? I used to just run my own machine as a server, so I've never had to deal with the two separate services. Even though I have a domain right now, I feel rather new at this. 😱

Actually....now looking at what AddAction offers more extensively maybe I'll try to coerce my folks into helping with the price (as I'm buying the domain for my family). My question about the IP aliases from NameCheap still stands though.

Another question about AddAction: what would I use an "extra dedicated IP (@ $0.95/mo)" for? If they're hosting, then why do I care about IPs?

Dedicated IPs allow you to do SSL, anonymous FTP, and a few other things. Some businesses need to have a dedicated IP for their site only. Normally when you get hosting, the IP your site is on is shared by other users, and Apache sorts out which site has been requested. In other words, if you need a dedicated IP, you'll already know it ahead of time, otherwise there's not much point in having one.

RossMAN, thanx alot for your help (I'd been reading alot of your previous posts in other threads). You are truly the ATOT guru on this subject.

I did NameCheap + AddAction afterall (though I'll probably add on another 200MB if space). My folks totally agreed that it was a good idea for the fam to a "web HQ", so to speak.

🙂🙂🙂

I used NameCheap and HostPC when HostPC was running the 2-for-1 special. I've been really happy with the service so far. 700 megs for $50/year and 8gigs of transfer is nice.

Gooberlx2 - Wise choice, I hope you and your family enjoy AddAction.net webhosting

What is a "Web HQ"?

KC5AV - HostPC.com's 2 for 1 sale was pretty damn hot deal, nice price!

heh, I was just quoting my parent's. A Family "Web Headquarters". I think they meant everyone having the same domain name for our email address. Also I plan to setup a BBS and Image Gallery on it, so they post family pics, or whatever on it. 😉

hmmm, there appears to be something wrong with the autoinstall tool. The "install" links don't show up (either in Opera or IE). Maybe they're updating it or something?
