Domain transfer ... some questions

Hi,

Dunno which forum to post this into, I thought this would be the most appropriate.

I'm in the process of transferring a domain, and being new to it, I'll ask a few questions here before messing it up 🙂

So let's say I have a "mydomain.com" under my registrar, and someone wants my domain. The domain is locked, so no one can claim it without me doing an unlock action.

Then I have this EPP info ... some randomly generated password I don't even know, but I could somehow change it or just get it to my knowledge.

Now my questions:

1. The person that want's to get the domain must go into it's registrar and ask for a transfer right? And he must pay for an extension, right?

2. What does he have to know? The EPP password? Can I give it to him? Or is it safe to do it?

(the term would not be EPP password, but EPP key instead, I think)

Thanks

Have one more question:

It is possible for not transfering the domain, and just define nameservers to it, pointing toward another place where other people will administrate the domain?

For example:

RegistrarA (my own) controls "mydomain.com". RegistrarA has it's own domain name servers.

RegistrarB (another person) will control "mydomain.com" definitions (CNAME, MX, etc...) but will not pay for the domain, nor will have any admin privileges over it.

So I would add some info in my RegistrarA config pages, that will make the domain point to RegistrarB, where that other person will control the CNAME, MX, etc... records.

I ask this because I've read some info on my Registrar config panel where I have the option to modify domain name servers:
+ Use Registrar name servers
+ Do not use Registrar name servers (I want to specify my own DNS servers.
(then I can add up to 12 nameservers, nameserver1, nameserver2, ...)

(sounds confusing 😀)

I believe so. The person wanting the domain goes to their registrar and requests the domain, then they have to give that registrar the key from the other one to prove that the transfer is legit. They'll most likely get charged for however long they want the domain for + a transfer fee.

2. What does he have to know? The EPP password? Can I give it to him? Or is it safe to do it? [/quote]

I beleive the terminology varies from registrar to registrar but the idea should be the same. You go into the registrar that currently hosts the domain, get the transfer key and give it to the person who wants the domain so he can give it to his registrar.

Sure, any registrar that I've worked with lets you define your own DNS servers. Most include DNS hosting services for free, but some are stupid enough to charge for it.

There is No universal rule for it.

Best thing would be to be the Registrar and ask how to transfer a Domain that is registered with them.

Agreed. I've done serveral transfers, and I've never heard of "EPP". I imagein it's something specific to your Domain Registrar.

Godaddy.com, for instance, publishes very specific instructions on how to do this and offers personal help with the transfer.Check the Registrars' sites for help.

As the Domain owner, you can normally specify whatever nameservers you want. Log onto the Domain Registrar and change the nameservers.
