domain squaters

I have registered 5 domains total in the past 5 years, 4 of them had super rediclious names that didn't even make sense. I've let them all expire after 1 year. And 4 (1 is still active) were registered by sombody else basically the second it expired. Do these people do it expecting to get an email from me, or whoever owned the domain that expired saying "I need it back! I'll pay you big bucks!"

3 of them were make up words, which I don't think anybody could have randomly picked. and then they get snatched up like they were the hottest thing going. I don't know how common this is, I just know it's happened to me 100% of the time so I have to image it's a regular thing. And I don't get it...

It's not neccesarily the domain name that's hot. It's the potential traffic that would view the site that they're after.

In all likelihood, the domains now redirect to or host clickthrough sites (tons of advertising links from which the owner gets paid per click). Simply put, the more domains they pick up, the more traffic and potential visitors who actually do click on an adverstisement.
