Domain RIPOFF!

I found a small company online that hosts websites online. I signed up with this company a few months ago and payed them $18 to register the domain to host. They registered it under their company name and hosted the site for about 4 months before I cancelled hosting. I still own the domain correct ? because I payed for it. I want to host it elsewhere, but How do I get ownership of it, since all the contacts are of that company (person). I can't contact the info on it, because he's moved. The phone number given on whois search doesn't work. Who should I contact to settle this ? is there anything I can do to get my domain back ?

If it's registered in their name, you're screwed. Next time, don't use one of these el-cheapo fly-by-night outfits.

wait a minute. you paid for domain registration and hosting for $18 bucks? what kind of contract was this for? when i registered for my domain, it was for a full year. but this was outside the hosting company. But if you registered month to month, then I can't really help you there. All you can do is register the domain once it is free..

i'm not really understanding..

if they went out of business or if they left and the domain was under their name, then you have no right in it. you;re pretty much screwed. go find another domain name, there are too many. sorry
