I tried to register a domain, which was taken by someone. From the whois info (from register.com), it expired on 10/16/02:

Registrar: DOMAINSITE.COM, INC.

Registrant: a guy name and address
Administrative: same name and address
Technical: same name and address
Billing: same name and address

Record created: 2000-10-16
Record expires: 2002-10-16

Domain Name Servers:
ns1.domainsite.com
ns2.domainsite.com

Since it is already expired, why can't I register this domain? Or the person already renewed it and the whois info is not update? Please advise how should I register an expired domain. Thank you.

The domain will go back to the registrar and they will keep it for a certain amount of time before it's released back out. For information, I would contact the registrar that has it and find out if they will sell it to you. They may have rules and have to keep it 'inactive' for a set amount of time after it expires.

Exactly. I think the real reason behind the registrar holding it a bit longer is to gain money from it. ;) I was going to face a similar situation with my own domain name (if I let it expire - I hated their registrar service)... but I found out I could just transfer registrars... not that it would help you in this case.
