I'm trying to register a domain that I used to have, (registered it through a registrar, but they want to screw me over and charge $80 to renew it this year, so I'm using godaddy) and it was supposed to have expired on Jan 14.

Updated Date: 24-feb-2004
Creation Date: 14-jan-2003
Expiration Date: 14-jan-2004

I can't get to the site, even though hosting works, so I know it's expired, but every registrar says that the domain is already taken.

Does anybody know what's going on?

try to pm rossman, he's the expert :) but iirc, they are put on hold for 30 days after they expire and no one but the original registrar can renew it...

It's been over 50 days. The domain registrar that I registered through is said to own it according to whois, but it also says it was supposed to have expired on Jan 15. I e-mailed godaddy support and they said the domain would definitely expire after 50 days, and it's been more than 50 days so I dont understand....Anybody had a similar experience?

I did, they say to pay them 80 bucks. My school won't pay that much for the domain (the domain is for my school newspaper)

Why not just register an .edu domain atomstryker since it's for a school newspaper?

do you have a receipt for the original registration, you could try and ownership dispute.

It takes more like 90 days. I forget the exact process but it's something like this:

Official domain expiration date
30 additional days for the original owner to renew
45 days deletion process
5 days before the domain becomes available

I'm not sure on the exact number of days; there is a site you can check but I forget the name of it. Until it officially becomes available again, it will not be available for registration, although it will have in the whois something to the effect of where it is at in the process.

Edit: found it here: https://www.snapnames.com/partners/snapnames/deleteprocess.html

Maybe request a domain TRANSFER from godaddy and see if that works. If it goes through that gives you a 1 year registration on the domain plus registrar info transfers to the new registrar.

BINGO.

Common sense would make you think that since it appears to be expired you could just register it.

There is usually a very long hold time on expired domains (I don't know exactly for how long or why).

Go to GoDaddy.com and request a domain transfer, assuming you are listed as the admin contact an automated e-mail should be sent to your e-mail address listed in WHOIS within 24 hours. I say should because it may not work since it's technically expired.

After a domain reaches the expiry date it no longer works for 15-30 days, after which if it is not registered it goes into a redemption period for around 40-45 days where you have to pay extra money to get the domain back (depends on the registrar). If you do not reclaim the domain it will finally be deleted so it can be registered again. Oh ya, and you will most likely not be able to transfer it while in redemption

You're welcome, glad I could help :)

There's a reason GoDaddy.com is #1 (although I personally think they suck compared to NameCheap.com).
