How does an organization such as a campus club go about securing a domain name? We would like to register it in such a way that it is independent of the members of the group. The goal is to make transition into new leadership as people graduate an easy task.

Can you just put in the organization's name in a godaddy.com order form? Has anyone here ever done this?

I was a member of a club awhile back and the domain was in the name of one guy who passed away. I remember the group had a really hard time getting control over it and basically had to use an alternate site name for a couple of months while they went though a lot of trouble to secure it. Unfortunately it was quite a while ago so asking them about it is out.

Thanks for looking.

I would recommend NameCheap.com over GoDaddy.com

Unfortunately whoever has the email address, password and pays for the domain controls it.

Who is in control of the campus club? Maybe that person and the secretary/treasurer can have access to the login username/password?

Ill look into namecheap, I like anything with the word cheap in it.

Edit: I was already thinking about a previous thread in the past couple of days where registering and hosting with the same company was not recommended.

We were wanting to set it up and have it paid from the club account. Just trying to avoid extra hassle when the current officers graduate next spring. We have had people in the past forget to do things like have the bank account info changed over and it is always a real headache. I was just hoping we could set it up independently so the only thing that has to be transfered is the bank account.

Thanks for the info I'll pass it along with anything else that shows up here.

When my university allowed clubs to have their own bank accounts, we just linked the payment method for the domain to the debit card for our club account. Now, the alumni (namely myself), pay for the domain.
