domain names (long.com vs short.sh)

Simple question for a friend who's looking to buy a domain name (he has a fairly common last name and all the 'good' ones are taken)

FirstInitialMiddleInitialLastName.com (ex: jksmith.com) ~$12/yr
vs.
lastename.sh (ex: smith.sh) ~$60/yr

I kind of like .sh because it's nerdy and shorter...

Unfortunately, other 'good' combos are taken (smith.io, smi.th, etc.)

edit: it's for personal use (blogging, net resume, web dev)

i would go with the cheaper one. the .sh you gave as an example isn't very memorable imo.

For example: john romero's blog is rome.ro. It's fun and easy to remember. That's what I would aim for if I was paying $60 a year.

why not do something like "smithsblog.com" or something?
