Domain names/hosting

^^ see topic.
Or is it better to try and do them both with the same company?
Also, if a place does really cheap domain registration, what are the risks compared with more expensive services? Are there any?

ev1 used to have 6.49 registration, and it kicked ass
godaddy just blows because of the visual assault that is their website
namecheap is ok

OK to buy domain name from company A and host a website at company B?

Yes and that's the best way to go.

Nope.

Domain registration - NameCheap.com or GoDaddy.com

Web hosting - e-rice.net is cheap and basic. HostPC.com is also a good choice.

It all depends on your budget?

It is common sense nowdays to have them seperate. If you get them together and have poblems down the road, don'tt go whining about it.

I was thinking of UK registration and then US hosting since US prices seem to be cheaper for hosting than UK prices, and there are some ~£3 for registration ($5) sites in the UK, which seems decent. I'm also not sure how easy it is to register .co.uk in the US 😛

doing it together is a pain if down the road you want to keep the domain name and not the hosting. some web hosts don't have domain name control panels and register the domains elsewhere (i.e. bulkregister) as a result you have little control over your domain. go with a place that does domain registration specifically (namecheap, godaddy) and somewhere else for your hosting needs...

Sorry I didn't notice that you're from the UK.

Register domain in UK and obtain US web hosting which means you don't have to pay VAT.

Register a domain tonight and I can host your web site for free, PM me with your email address.

If you're ever looking for quality hosting with servers based in the UK I would highly recommend clook.net

They aren't cheap but they're top notch and well worth it.

One problem with hosting in the US, is the the transfer speeds will be a bit slower than those from servers based in the US. You should try to find a hosting company with servers on the east coast.

Do you have to get an email service from the people you register the domain with if you want email@domain.co.uk? Or can you get an email service set up with the hosting and have it email@domain.co.uk?
<-- newbie at websites/hosting

Email is set up with the webhost in their control panel (usually cPanel, or DirectAdmin).

DeviousTrap is correct, email is setup with your web host (not domain registrar) via control panel.

I used clook for a year, very nice operation they have there but it was actually too high of quality for my needs at that time.
