just tried going to joker.com. site wouldn't load. not a reassuring thing. for $10 a year do they have their own dns or do you have to do that yourself or go to an outside provider. if there's no dns included for the $10 then it's definitely not worth it.

I know we have this debate about every two weeks, but I just wanted to put in a plug for DomainMonger.com. I've registered a half dozen domains through them. They're fast (the domain will be available in about 24 hours), professional (their site has great account management tools), and, yes, cheap -- $17 for one year, but cheaper if you register for extra years at a time (you generally save $1/year). There are some sites that are a few dollars cheaper, but there are also lots of horror stories about registrars who don't know what you're doing.

And always be careful to see whether or not you actually OWN the domain name you're registering. With DomainMonger you do, and it's very easy to transfer ownership between people.

(And for the record: No, I don't work with or for these people.)

Joker.com is coming up fine here - I'm sure it is an isolated problem on your route to them. I use dotster.com - $15/year and great management interface via the web (most have it but I can personally assure you dosters is nice and quick!). They responded quickly to my request for a name server setup and subsequent queries about moving the name server - highly recommended.

If you are planning on buying more than ~25 domains go to OpenSRS.org and signup for a reseller account (no, you don't have to resell them). They charge $10/year but no support beyond normal stuff... OpenSRS is from the people behind Tucows.

I've heard good things about joker.com too but personally haven't used them...

I have been using directnic.com for my company and I have tried a lot of different ones, so far this is the best. $15/year

by the way, don't use onestop.net they suck

onestop.net does suck, however registerclub.com is fantastic! And only $10 per year. Responsive, helpful, quick.

One thing everyone needs to remember: You get what you pay for.

Register.com is a top level service that maintains it's own database.
They are the second largest registrar of Domain Names behind Network Solutions. All these other services may be nice and inexpensive, but don't be surprised if half of them are out of business in the next couple of years and then who knows the status of your Domain registration.

I certainly wouldn't trust a business registration to those cheap guys. Maybe a hobby page or homepage, but for any real business I just wouldn't trust my registration with any small domain resellers.

yup, you do get what you pay for. I personally have a few domain names stretched out across various resellers, but I barely trust any of them to stay in business for an extend amount of time. If you're registering a domain name that is vital to a business or something like that, I'd suggest you go with register.com

My two cents worth

I prefer Joker too - I have registered more than ten domain names with them in the past year and have received both excellent support and prices from them ($10)

For managing my domains (Forwarding URLS/ Changing DNS records MX, CNAME etc) I use My Domain My Domain. They offer all these services free of charge and have an excellent site layout and design - unfortunately they are not accepting new registrations till later this year.

I've registered more than 100 domains with Joker and have had no problems with them. If any, the worst part of their service is how you'll have to snailmail them the form for transfer of Domain Ownership - which i deem to be quite logical however since it makes sure that you are who you say you are and such.

As for stability, Joker.com is a subsidiary of NRW.Net, one of Germany's larger ISP's so i'm not worried about it at all :)

Register.com is a subsidery of NSI, and like NSI you don't own your domain. Read the terms and conditions. Gandi is supposed to be the best on conditions and price (but you will pay in Euro's). I use Dotster, hell anything is better than NSI or anyone affiliated with them.
