Domain Name "shortening" on IE6, WinXP

When I was using IE6 on Windows 98, I could skip typing the TLD and domain name, and it would substitute my local values. For example, I could type in "www/webmail", and it would access "www.princeton.edu/webmail", although the longer address did not appear in the address bar. Now I've switched to Windows XP, and the same trick doesn't work.

The only thing that has changed as far as network settings is that I no longer log on to the NT domain that gave us access to printers and school software - I access those shares individually with the same name and password now. But, I don't think that would be the reason the short addresses don't work.

Any suggestions on how to get this back?

Maybe append dns suffixes in advanced tcp/ip properties? Thats what I would try (dont have an xp machine to make sure it is in the same place there though)

Vonderful. Every day here I am learn sometink nu. Yu are cheenius!!

For those keeping score at home:
Control Panel -> Network Connections
Right-Click "Local Area Network" and select Properties.
Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click Properties.
Click "Advanced" then the DNS tab.
Change from "Append Primary and connection specific DNS suffixes" to "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)". Add the domain name and TLD (or whatever you don't want to type).
