Domain Name Registration

There is a domain name out there that is currently registered to dotster.com (a domain name registrar), but it is not being used (if you try to access the domain, you get an "operation timed out" error).

The domain is set to expire August 13 of 2004, IIRC. But is there a way I can get it earlier? Like I say, a registrar owns the name currently, but they aren't using it.

Is this a case of cybersquatting?

Yup, it's cybersquatting. Maybe the owner bought it to use it but decided not to use the name or doesn't have time to use it. Just wait until August .... I doubt the owner will renew.

So no it's not cybersquatting (especially if it's a registrar doing it) unless the domain name should obviously belong to the owner of the company/brand with the same established name. You can't get it earlier unless they release it.

There are services that will grab up a domain within a few minutes (seconds, maybe) of it being released. Somebody once told me they used one.

It's not really cybersquatting unless someone else has a legitimate claim to the name. I can register fladipoop.com and do jack with it. I'm not doing anything wrong unless someone else has fladipoop as their registered trademark/service mark.

Case in point..

my site is www.slycat.net
i have been asking this asshole since 1998 for www.slycat.com....
he refuses to sell it, doesn't use it, thinks its worth some sh!t...till now...
STILL, he fvcking renews it and lets it sit there. mutha piss me off.

i want to buy it now.
ahhah

i was just kidding about listing it -- edit your post to remove it!! someone might buy it!!!

How do you know they aren't using it? A lot of organizations register domains just for email.

I work for a Tier 2 ISP and we have thousands of zones that only have NS & MX records built on our name servers.

I was talking to the OP! 😛 Besides, the guy you're talking about could be doing the same.

So I checked the whois server at dotster.com, and found who owns the domain. Should I stay on the "down-low" until it expires, or do I contact him to ask if I could buy it?

Also, do domain names really expire on the day given? Isn't there some sort of grace period?

oh ok..sorry to hijack. 😀

i talked to him many times before, he has he has plans to sell sh!t on his "website"
and will design one soon...so its been 6yrs...wtf is it?

stay on the dl man...coz contacting them is a mistake...and u can read up on their terms in his registrar coz there is a grace period...where they can re-reg it for him if he 'forgets'.

I would keep my mouth shut. Usually there is a hold period before the domain can be registered by someone else.

keep it on the downlow

then when it expires, try and scoop it up (before I do at least!! j/k). 🙂

if he renews it, then the only option may be to contact him.

aves2k is correct.

There is at least a 45 day hold period.
