Apologies if this is a truly stupid question (in contrast to the oft-quoted "there are no stupid questions," I am a firm believer that there are) . . .

How does one go about registering domain names that include "dots" prior to the .suffix.

For example, can the domain name:

www.ice.cream.com be registered?

If not, how do sites like ma.gnolia.com and del.icio.us come into being exactly?

Is the official registry icio.us? And the company has a server with the del prefix address?

those are subdomains. they are configured from the webhost and DNS servers. icio.us is one domain, cream.com is another, anything below that are subdomains

Yep.

icio.us is the registered domain and the prefix is a "subdomain".

For example, if you register doctordoctor.com and create a subdomain letsplay giving you a result http://letsplay.doctordoctor.com

Use domain suggestions to see what domains are available and NameCheap.com to register the domain.

The final two steps are web hosting and content/HTML/scripts.
