My username is not taken, would it be legal for me to register it. If not, suggestions for a short domain name.

Yeah, from what I've heard, if a company asks for you to stop using a domain (even if they have no case, kind of like MikeRoweSoft), and you ask for money to give them the domain, you've essentially proved that you registered the domain in "bad faith" and they can take it back without giving you anything.

The only reason Microsoft reimbursed Mike Rowe was because it was cheaper then the negative publicity.
 
exactly...the key is always bad faith. If you get a domain it is always a good practice to at least put up one page that says "Hey this is me" or something like that.
