Domain name nameserver problems?

Just over a week ago I changed the nameservers for a domain name (myfavoritemartinguitars.com) which is registered and managed through Ampira. I changed them to those of AddAction (in this case 64.26.0.23 and 64.26.38.2), with whom the domain is now parked ... i.e. the DNS records are setup so that requests to myfavoritemartinguitars.com point to the root directory for the myfavoriteguitars.com site.

According to the WHOIS record this change has successfully filtered through (http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois?STRING=myfavoritemartinguitars.com&SearchType=do).

However when I try to call up the address myfavoritemartinguitars.com in my Internet browser the site can't be found. And when I ping the domain myfavoriteguitars.com I get the IP address 66.113.130.226, which upon a reverse lookup reveals that the IP is oddly pointing to a server (lsh133.siteprotect.com) with the old host, HostWay, who used to have the DNS records for the domain ... and still do in fact as the hosting account with them has not been shut down. Yet the domain doesn't really point anywhere at the same time! All this is very confusing!

Any help ASAP really appreciated as this is costing the business money...

Thanks,

I can't get a resolution for myfavoritemartinguitars.com at all. And netsol seems to be doing maintenance now so I can't even check that link. :)

According to this: http://www.whoisquery.com/cgi-bin/rwhois.cgi?reg=domaindirect&domain=myfavoritemartinguitars.com the domain servers are the ones you specified. However just because the registry information now points to the new domain servers, doesn't mean the new DNS info has propagated from those servers to others. Most name servers do caching, so they may not update immediately. Of course, a week is a long time.

A direct query to your new nameservers resolves the address as 66.113.130.226, so your own new host's servers are giving out the wrong address.

Also, the address I get for myfavoriteguitars.com is 66.113.130.208, which is also with HostWay and is also not recognized by HostWay.

Oddly, this is the output of nslookup for your domain through my ISP's nameservers (which won't resolve the IP).

C:\Documents and Settings\Evermore>nslookup myfavoritemartinguitars.com
Server: ns1.covad.net
Address: 66.134.199.11

Name: myfavoritemartinguitars.com
Served by:
- D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET

- E.ROOT-SERVERS.NET

- F.ROOT-SERVERS.NET

- G.ROOT-SERVERS.NET

- H.ROOT-SERVERS.NET

- I.ROOT-SERVERS.NET

- J.ROOT-SERVERS.NET

- K.ROOT-SERVERS.NET

- L.ROOT-SERVERS.NET

- M.ROOT-SERVERS.NET

And another thing is the lookup for the new DNS servers:

C:\Documents and Settings\Evermore>nslookup 64.26.0.23
Server: ns1.covad.net
Address: 66.134.199.11

(root) nameserver = M.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = B.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = C.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = E.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = F.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = G.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = H.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = I.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = J.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = K.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
(root) nameserver = L.ROOT-SERVERS.NET
*** No address (A) records available for 64.26.0.23

I don't know enough about DNS functions to know what this means, but it seems to me that their own servers aren't properly set up.

You might want to check with the new host and make sure the DNS information is properly in the zone files.

I'm not really clear on what you've done though. You can't have a domain parked with one service, and hosted with another service at the same time. If you want AddAction to be the DNS service, you need to change the settings at Ampira to point to those domain servers (which seems to have been done) and then you need to make sure that HostWay doesn't have any DNS settings configured. Then the servers at AddAction need to start sending out the proper IP address, since they currently are pointing to the IPs with HostWay. The IPs also need to be changed for the myfavoriteguitars domain.

Oh by the way, the name servers at addaction are also part of the siteprotect domain. :) It seems that your "new" service and the old service are in bed together. One is probably just leasing wholesale services to the other where they're being resold. Or they both use the same nameservers that they've leased from someone else entirely. There's a lot of backroom stuff going on with all the hosting and domain registration services, one company wholesale leasing services to several other resellers. As you can see on the whois info, Ampira just uses Tucows as the actual registrar.
