Domain Controller Scenario

I was wondering if this was possible or was a good idea -

So i have an old windows 2000 domain, with 2 DCs and I'm thinking about adding another as a backup. Would it be possible to add a 2008 R2 server in this domain?

Thanks for the fast reply. Yes i definitely would like to upgrade them eventually or maybe just create new DCs and migrate?

Yes, that's what I recommend. If it is older hardware, just get new systems and bring them up as Windows 2008 R2 DCs, transfer the FSMO roles off the Windows 2000 DCs, and then DCPROMO the Windows 2000 DCs out of their domain controller role.

yeah never ever ever try to P2V a domain controller - while it may seem the easiest - it can create a big mess. I'd bump up to 2003 native AD - it seems fully compatible with everything afterwards. there are a few little bugs with 2008 R2 i'm not quite happy with
