Domain Controller and Router

I just setup Windows 2000 Server at home to start learning it. I've got an SMC doing DHCP, but I want to set up the server box as the domain controller. How would I go about doing that?

And in doing so, when I go to join the other computers in the house to the domain, do they need to be on a switch under the second NIC in the server, or just on the same subnet?

Thanks,
Hoober

What are you trying to do with the server? Do you want it to control access to the internet or something? If so you really don't HAVE to have the router. You can have the Win2K server be the DC and have the router performing DHCP also. You just want to put your DNS entries into the router. If you want your server to do the internet access restriction bit then you need to run all connections through the server, I think. Damn, confusing myself. Or at least point your DNS initially to the server, and from the server you can redirect back out to the router then to your ISP. Of course if your clients want to change the settings to the router's DNS address they can bypass your Security settings.

Ok -- that clears things up a little. At least I don't need to run the connection through the server.

I just tried joining one of the computers to the domain and I got the error message saying that the path was not valid.....

Did you give the user an account on the DC? BTW, the setup at my office is the same way. We run the DHCP and DNS off of the router, and the NT 4.0 servers act as PDC and BDC.
