I think this is relevant here. Is there a soundcard that will decode these formats for a HTPC? If not does anyone know of one on the horizon?

Normally these formats are decoded by the player and output via analog outputs to your receiver or you would use HDMI to pass it to your decoder. Am I correct?

So can I find a soundcard that will decode this audio from HD DVD and Blue-Ray disks for my HTPC?

I don't think the sound card would decode it, but rather the software.

Well, I notice that PowerDVD says it supports Dolby TrueHD but I didn't know that it would/if it would decode that audio during playback.

It does, but only through analog.

which is the best way to go anyway since there aren't many receivers that can actually decode the Dolby TrueHD bitstream.

Thanks for the quick answer though.

It will decode whatever format and downmix if necessary for S/PDIF. Some can even be recoded to AC3/DTS. But yeah, with HDMI or analog, tracks exceeding 640Kbps (such as uncompressed LPCM) can maintain their quality. Of course with analog, high quality DAC would be necessary at the very least or otherwise it would be pointless.
