Should I pay little more to get this DPL2 or not?
I got Pioneer VSX-D850S for $260 but does not have DPL 2.
Should I return this and pay little more to get reciever with DPL2?

It's also good for non DD or DTS signals, such as a majority of the television stations!

SO DPLII wil make TV sound better if I listen to it on a 5.1 system?

If the TV station doesn't broadcast in DD 5.1, how do you expect to decode it? PL II will allow 4 channels to play. ;)

A Listener's Guide To Pro Logic II

Almost everyone has experienced the enveloping, electrifying effect of 5.1-channel surround sound in the cinema and at home. Surround sound is addictive. Once you get used to it, you'll never want to go back to plain stereo sound. And now you don't have to.

Pro Logic II from Dolby Laboratories gives you multichannel surround sound from any stereo source?CDs, tapes, videocassettes, TV broadcasts, AAC files, you name it. No matter if you're listening to Stravinsky, the Stones, or a Schwarzenegger movie, you'll get the realistic, involving sound you'd expect from a 5.1-channel system.

How Pro Logic II Works

Pro Logic II is a dramatically improved, updated matrix surround system, based on the principles used to develop the original Dolby Pro Logic decoding back in the 1980s. The original Pro Logic features four channels?front left, center, and front right, plus a mono surround channel that's usually split between two rear speakers. The surround channel is also "band-limited," reducing the treble frequencies. Pro Logic II further enhances the sound with a full-range stereo surround output and a greatly improved steering logic, resulting in high channel separation and an exceptionally stable soundfield.

DPLII is like DPLI, but with some improvements. If you currently have a 5.1 receiver, it has either DPLI or DPLII (most likely I as II is fairly new and still not standard on all new receivers.) DPL(Dolby Pro-logic) was the predecessor to DD5.1, and therefore is not nearly as good. But its the only surround sound you'll get off a TV broadcast(unless you have new digital cable or satellite that supports 5.1) Read this to see the exact differences between DD, DPL1, and DPL2.

Thanks for the response John, the reason I asked was because my current receiver will take 2 channel sound and output it from my 5.1 system, it's called sound fields.

edit: Thanks for the info and link mikebb :)

I gotta disagree...DPL2 is great for stereo signals. In some cases it can produce some really great sound that is pretty close to surround sound.

I definitely like having DPL II on my receiver. It is leaps and bounds better than Pro Logic I, and it is great when watching movies on DirecTV that aren't sent as DD 5.1 signals.

It is not meant to replace DD 5.1, but it is great for those non-DD sources.

I use DPLII on my receiver for watching TV and it's nice. When watching baseball games and they have the scene changes with the stuff wizzing around I can sometimes hear it go through the room on the speakers.

Check out the Kenwood VR-507 receiver. It's what I have and is quiet nice. I actually got it in the HTB 504 home theater in a box for $412 clearanced at Sears which was an awesome deal. HH Gregg has the HTB 505 on sale this week for around $450 if I remember right. It looks to be a replacement of the HTB 504 with a slightly nicer receiver.

nice...

hehehe

Ya know, I was gonna go into the actual improvements, but then I didn't feel like writing them down when I could link to dolby.com instead. I'm tired, I'm lazy, don't make fun of me.

Basically I will reiterate what others have said....Pro Logic II is nothing close to DD ot DTS. Its not gonna help you at all for DVD's. But for sources that aren't DD ro DTS compatible, such as TV or Gamecube, its great. Especially Gamecube, since a few games(RL and ED), and more down the road, are specifically designed for PLII.

I recommend Logic 7, it comes on Harman Kardon recievers and Lexicon pre/pro. The Harman Kardon Recievers are reasonable priced but the Lexicons will cost you a few grand.

Logic 7 is the best surround processing there is for non dolby digital recordings. It also works with Dolby Digital recordings as well to improve there sound.

DPLII is good for gamecube games and divx rips.

So if you rip a dvd with an MP3 VBR audio track and output the sound using RCA cables to a DPL2 receiver, will you get surround sound with 4 channels? I would be using the onboard sound of a Soyo Dragon +.
