Dolby Digital with 4.1 setup?

Alright, I have a 4.1 speaker setup that supports Dolby Digital, Prologic, and is THX certified(the altec ADA885). On the other end, I have my new SB Audigy. If I play Dolby Digital on my 4.1 setup, what happens? I mean, isn't Digital meant for 5.1? Am I totally misinterpreting? Why the heck can't I find an easy FAQ to tell me the answer to this??? 🙂 Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. 🙂

PS - First Post, don't flame me too bad. I've been lurking in the shadows for some time now, but never posted.

Welcome to the forums!

<< Am I totally misinterpreting? >>

Not totally, but almost 😉

The Dolby Digital FAQ might explain some of what you are asking about.

<< If I play Dolby Digital on my 4.1 setup, what happens? >>

The center channel gets split evenly between the front left and front right speakers.

If you have any other questions post 'em or PM me.

That's not a post! Your first flame. WinDVD has a feature to decode the dts or 5.1 dvd to whatever speaker setup you have. Power DVD may have that too, I don't know. But I have WinDVD and it will definitely decode properly for your speakers. If your speakers have a built in decoder, I think the audigy does as well, they of course will also do the translation for you.
