Just looked up the Turtle Beach Montego.
Apparently, it can do real-time DD encoding from any PC audio source.
Now, does this finally mean that true multi-channel gaming using the S/PDIF output is possible?
I recall that almost no sound cards support EAX/Sensaura over the digital output, your only option to get true surround sound for games was through the analog multichannel outputs..

Can someone verify this for me?

The HDA/bluegears X-Mystique is another card that can do this.

These cards have been out for a while and I've tried to mention them in most threads about hooking up a comptuer to a Hometheater system or anyone attempting digital out as a connection.

I have the X-Mystique and with the drivers off their site it's working well.

Hmm... what other cards have this capability that you would recommend?
How are they for gaming compared to the favoured Creative cards?

With DDL, it's a short list:
Montego DDL
HDA X-Mystique
Nforce Soundstorm (but only nforce 1&2!)

That's all I know of really. If you are more worried about gaming than anything, then get a Creative. If it's about 50/50 gaming and music, you'll probably be happy with Creative, unless you have uber speakers. If all you do is music, then consider the other options.

Glad to see the list is growing. I've been using DDLive on my nForce 2 board for a couple of years now, and it's great only needing 1 optical cable rather than a string of analog cables.

Have you noticed any sound lag or syncing issues with the Dolby Digital encoding? I've been considering the Montego DDL for my HTPC but have read some forum posts about it having sound lag.

If it's similar to the nForce Soundstorm encoding, you should be able to play games in full 5.1 sound over the digital output. I believe it does the encoding after all the sound processing has been completed (EAX effects included).

EDIT: Bah, misread and thought you bought one. Hopefully someone reading this thread has one and can answer :)

Didn't notice any lag on my X-Mystique.

It all depends on what kind of sound system you're hooking up.

If you have a set of computer speakers, then just stick with creative.
