Dolby digital encoding/decoding on a PC

I just built a new gaming PC using a Asrock z97 extreme6 motherboard. The pc it replaced had used a sound blaster X powering a Yamaha receiver and a 5.1 setup via the optical out. In order to use this setup and get true surround for non pre-encoded material, ie games, I had to ensure the included THX software was setup right.

Fast forward to today and when I moved the SBX card over, it appeared to have problems and is being very flaky. I moved over to using the motherboards optical out and, as far as I can tell, I'm getting 5 channels still. The received shows 5 speakers (previously it would show 2 when plugged into my old motherboards optical out unless playing a blu-ray). I have been gaming and it appears I'm getting surround, but I'm having a devil of a time confirming that. Are there simple test files I can run?

Another question is with the subwoofer. I'm using a cheap polk 10" and for some reason, I don't always get bass, it seems like an audio source has to have enough low notes to it for the SW to kick it, otherwise I just get sound from my speakers. Is there a way I can force the SW to kick in at higher frequencies?

Thanks for the help, I'm obviously a novice at this. For reference, the speakers I'm using are energy micros.
