I just brought home a new reciever and surround sound system....I was wondering what you guys thought was better and why. I dont have any movies that are in DTS other wise I would give an opinion on my own....

DTS!!

You will hear it.. Fry's out here has a separate DVD section just for DTS dvd's.. The separation is MUCH more defined.. If I can hear it. anyone can.

From what I understand DTS is not as compressed as Dolby and it retains more of what it's supposed to sound like.. However, it takes up more space on the DVD so they sometimes offer a Dolby, with the extras and a DTS without the extras.. Some have both though.. (Like terminator 2)

I only noticed a very slight difference. I certainly wouldn't pay extra for DTS over DD, and if given the choice between DTS or more extras I would choose the extras. Audiophiles will probably feel differently.

I asked this question before... seems like DTS is just "louder"... takes up more space... for the same thing DD does for less... :D There's a bunch of sites on the net regarding this matter... wish i could give you a link but i deleted them all since i can hardly tell a difference between them... or i'm just deaf. :D

I agree with boyRacer. DTS seems to have a larger "presence" than DD. It's not that I think DTS is better than DD, it just seems that the sound stage is bigger IMHO. It's hard to quantify "better." Some movies just have better sounds and scores than others. I guess the content makes a difference as well...

DTS is less compression and is therefore technically better. Not to mention, I think it sounds better too :)

Less compression could also mean... less sophistication... :D ... some home theatre forums say that because DTS has a louder encoding... it is generally perceived as "better" by the public. but i wouldn't know... like i said i'm deaf... i'll take either one but i wouldn't pay more if i had to choose between the two.

The only diff. I can tell is the bass is less boomy and more refined in DTS, which is a good thing.

DTS is nice, when it's available, and even tho I'd consider my system better-than-average, I'm not gonna cry if I can't have my DTS...if the movie sucks, it sucks no matter what. if it's really good, THAT'S when it matters, IMHO...like, take Jurassic Park or Saving Private Ryan or any movie that's audio-intensive, that's when a choice is most welcome.

I agree. DTS just seems louder more than anything to my ears. One of my personal favorite audio sequences out of my DVD collection (the opening credits to Gone in 60 Seconds) is a DolbyDigital movie and I don't see how DTS could improve it in any way. Whenever it's a choice I'll usually pick DTS, but I honestly can't tell much of a difference and really don't care if the DVD has it or not. I'm sure there are some technical differences you can hear from the engineer's perspective, but for the average joe I think it's a lot like people supposedly being able to hear a difference between a Monster cable and regular heavy gauge speaker cable.

Well you have to remember, a lot of DVDs had AC3 first, and then came out with DTS 5.1, which probably was remastered for better quality.

Can't really tell on my POS system, but it seems to me on a better system that DTS sounds more natural. Although I think DD5.1 in most cases sounds almost as good since the compression is done subtly

My ears are definite untrained and I can hear the difference in surround effects with DTS.
