Doing these things to your HDD apparently voids the warranty..

seriously, how can you void the warranty by having the stupid plastic socket broken? If it wasn't for everyone who doesn't know how to properly position an ide cable, there'd be no real need for it...besides the fact that, in no way, is it anymore of a cosmetic defect than some lame scratch.

I think they are assuming that if you're aggressive enough to break the plastic or really scratch the hell out of the thing, you've probably dropped it or beat the piss out of it and therefore have voided the warranty...

As for the one with the missing screws on top, I know that there are products you can buy to replace the top of the hard drive with a clear top so you can see the inside of the drive. Given how sensitive the disk is, doing this outside of a "clean" room can screw it up. A professor did this with an old 1gb drive in my class, showing it plugged into the computer while spinning. It still worked afterwards, but there were problems with it working properly. This is a case where bling is absolutely, positively stupid. It pretties up your computer at the cost of screwing up your hard drive. What were the thinking?!
