Doing the Mame Thing

[*]I'm pretty sure I want to use the Hot Rod Joystick for $99, however, does the unit come in any other colors other than the garish purple?

[*]I'm going to be using a television for the screen, so I need someone to recommend a video card that has excellent tv out. I'm thinking like a Radeon 7500. Any other ideas?

[*]I already have a MOBO, an old Soyo K7 Dragon +. What would be a good cpu to drop in this bad boy and have it run most of the games? (I would like it to possibly run the Metal Slugs, NBA Jam, and the Mortal Kombats. Maybe an 1800+?

[*]How much RAM do I need? 256 or 512?

[*]For speakers, how do people connect car speakers and what powers these? Is that a better option than say a good 2.1 PC set?

[*]What OS would be the best to run Mame? Is there any free OS's that just run an emulator?

[*]Would the $4.99 PS that is in hot deals run a Mame set up?

Thanks in advance. I'll continually post pictures as I progres. I already have cabinet which looks perfect.

Metal Slug runs just fine in NeoRageX on my 1600+
I don't think I've fired it up in MAME since it works so well in NeoRage

If you're using a cabinet, make your own control panel, don't waste your money on a hot rod.

Any ATI video card will give you decent TV-out (make sure you use s-video). If you do go with an NVIDIA card, make sure you get tvtool, it's a small software package which greatly improves the image quality.

1800+ will run over 95% of all mame games, including all the games you mentioned.

256MB of ram will do, but with the low cost, might as well go for 512MB, 1GB is not worth it though, MAME will not use that much.

I'd just go with regular 2.1 PC speakers, you can always get a grill cover from someplace like partsexpress.com to make it look better.

You can run linux as an OS, but your options of frontends will be limited, most frontends are created for windows (usually winXP).

I'm not sure which PS you're talking about, but if you're not going to have a lot of optical drives or HDs, then a 300W PS should work.

Thanks for the reply. I do have one question about the control panel though. It will cost me basically the same price to create my own control panel, so I would rather save time and have someone else make it for me. This is a bad idea?

I own an X-Arcade Solo and it is fantastic. I might also suggest purchasing an inexpensive 19" CRT monitor as opposed to using a TV...me thinks you would get much better image quality with the monitor. As for a CPU, I'm running an Athlon 1.1 and can run all of the games you've mentioned w/out any problems.

My $.02.

The monitor may not support the required resolution/refresh rate. EDIT: Forgot he was using a PC to emulate. Forget this sentence.

Also, X-Arcade makes decent sticks, but you can make your own that are just as good, if not better, for a lower price. That is, if you already have the tools needed or have access to them through a friend or whatnot.

Well I defintely have the tools needed. Maybe I should make a custom control panel.

I need to buy an IPAC then also, correct?

And I've read a tv is better since PC monitors are too sharp and alot of the games were not meant to be played on a sharp screen.

I use a 27" TV with s-video and I prefer it to the PC monitor. Now if you can afford an arcade monitor that'd be your best option, but those usually run around $300+ unless you find a used one.

The advantage of building your own control panel is that you can customize it to your needs/wants. You can also make it fit better to your cabinet. If you're using an existing cabinet, you can fit the new control panel where the old one was rather than cutting the old cabinet to fit a new control panel.

All of these questions have been answered many times at www.arcadecontrols.com visit the message board and read all the examples.

Howard, I got a couple of more questions I'm hoping you can help me with.

For joysticks, which is better, the Super or Competition, both made by HappControls?

Where can I find a 4-way joystick like those used for pac-man, the kind with the ball-top? Or am I better to just use a Happ Joystick?

What IPAC do I need? Does a joystick take up one of the inputs, or 8 of them for an 8-way stick?

Do I want the happ PUSHBUTTON WITH HORIZONTAL MICROSWITCH or the ULTIMATE PUSHBUTTON WITH MICROSWITCH?

Thanks in advance.
