Doing my NC taxes, I can't be reading this right.

Apparently I owe more money because I am claiming myself as a dependent? This doesn't make any sense, all these exemptions are being ADDED to your federal taxable income. Has anyone else done theirs and run into this? This form has got to be wrong.

Why are you claiming yourself as a dependent? You must mean you are claiming yourself as an exemption. Did you complete the Federal portion of your taxes before moving onto the state portion? Which tax program are you using?

Federal taxes are done, they were easy. This NC form is abslutely assinine. You have to jump ahead to lines on page 3 to fill in lines on the first page. Anyway, I'm not using any software, just my noodle. It's shaping up like this:

Standard fed deduction 4700
NC standard deduction 3000
Difference between the two 1700
Personal exemption adjustment 500
Amounted added to my Federal Taxable income 2200

I swear I'm looking at this right. That's $2200 I never made that I am being taxed on. My sister zeroed out on the whole section because she couldn't claim herself as a dependent. The form is right here:

Claim 0 and most likely you will not have to pay. Of course it's always good to have extra taken out for safety measures.

I have $20 extra for Fed and $10 extra from State bi-weekly, and that helps A LOT!! :)

The 1040EZ form is relative easy unless you're itemizing - then that usually becomes a pain in the butt.

Edt: Nevermind, this is still not making any sense.

Edit 2: Ok, I figured it out. Damn negative numbers. You'd think if they wanted a negative number for your taxable income they wouldn't make the instruction so obscure and give you a freaking table to calculate it.
