Two weeks ago I did a complete re-install of Vista Ultimate on my laptop. Yesterday I realized that I had forgotten the beta of Office 2010 when I did my installed my programs. So I installed 2010 again but this time I left the updates on auto.

I fell asleep on the couch watching football and awoke at 3 am to my laptop rebooting. Too tired to get up I waited until this morning to see what had happened. At first I thought I had a virus so I ran a scan. While clicking around to get the scan going, I noticed that whenever I hovered over something I got this funny aero glass thing going (I disable all the eye candy shit) I run a scan and nothing comes up. So I check email but all my emails are as are my email settings are gone. I open up IE and find that Bing is my default search provider when I had set to google.
I click on my favorites to come here and all my favorites are gone. I check the updates and sure as shit 2010 had an update last night/early morning at 3 am. I lost tons of shit because of this. This has never happened from a Windows update. Nothing seemed to worked correctly also.

Tried a system store and nothing so I had to reinstall again.

Eww, why were you using IE? I used to laugh at people who thumbed their noses at web browsers, but IE is such a completely over the top hulking pile of garbage that it's hard to imagine anyone using it. Hell, even my mom uses firefox over IE, and both icons sit on her desktop. Once scripts work easier in chrome I'll go back to that.

This is why the first thing you do is turn off automatic updates

That's a terrible idea. People like this are the ones that get used in DOS attacks. It's better to have critical updates pushed down to you instead of you having to remember to go get them. You can set your computer to "don't automatically reboot", but don't turn off automatic updates.

Now, what happened here is you installed Office 2010, which has a lot of Bing integration. The beta probably changed you settings, and when you reinstalled it it probably reset your browser.

IE8 fixed a lot of issues that IE7 had with bulkiness, speed, and security. It's actually one of the better browsers out there now.

Here's a quick link:

Why would just an update for 2010 do all of that? You basically would have to have agreed to let it do that. The fact that you started off thinking you had a virus tells me there's more to this.

Definitely, this seems like a pebkac error.

Nope the install of 2010 did not do it because I had it installed before and it did not this. I also installed yesterday morning shut it down ate lunch and then turned it back on and played around with Word during the football game. Shut down for dinner and turned it back on during the second game to look up Archie Mannings stats. It was however the update of 2010.

Maybe it installed things under another profile (I've seen beta software pop itself into the Admin profile before).

This why the first thing you do after a new install/getting all updates/software configured the way you like it is create a disk image. Reformatting/re-installing never felt better!

Also, it's a bit weird that Office 2010 beta basically "restored" your PC to factory settings...

Why reinstall vista, if you had to format may as well put Vista SP1 aka Windows 7. :D

But yeah that does sound screwed up. I always disable WU too, I don't trust MS to be pushing stuff to my PC at their own will. Remember that WGA tool issue? Glad I did not have WU on when they pulled that off!

I realize you're trying to be clever, but Vista SP2, let alone SP1, actually exists. Are you sure you work in IT?

lol vista already has SP2? That's nuts, it has not even been out for that long. Shows how crappy it is lol.

And yes I'm in It and we run a proper XP environment, we don't jump on new stuff because it's going to be an issue.

Jumping on Vista was a mistake from day 1. You need to give any new OS enough time to mature before considering it. Now look at everyone that jumped on it, if they had waited they could of just went straight to 7.
