Hi folks,
I ordered this 40x12x48 Liteon from Dell two weeks ago. I didn't get around to installing it until this weekend and ever since I've started using the drive it's been pretty spotty about reading CDs. It has been able to write CDs just fine, however when I try to read anything from a CD in the Liteon, things don't work quite so well. Bear with me here as this is rather long:
I first noticed oddness while trying to open .jpg files from a CD full of vacation pics shot on a digital camera. Any .jpgs I tried to load from the CD, would return with a 'This is not a valid JPEG-JFIF file.' error in Paint Shop Pro. Photoshop manages to spit out 'Could not open "Y:\filename.jpg" because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete).' If I put this CD into my Pioneer DVD-105F drive, everything works just fine. The CD also works fine in a 24x NEC scsi cdrom in another one of our machines, as well as a Teac 40x12x48. If I try to copy any of said .jpgs over, windows explorer barfs with a 'Cannot copy FILENAME: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.'
Next I tried a CD with a lot of my saved game files on it from various games. This CD I know works because I've used it on another computer to transfer saved games to. Trying to copy files from this CD in the Liteon results in the above 'Cannot copy FILENAME: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.' and sometimes 'Cannot copy filename: Error performing inpage operation.'
I thought it may have been quirks with the media (the above CDs are no-name brand and identify as CMC if I recall right), so I tried a TDK CD that I've burned that identifies as Taiyo Yuden. Same errors while trying to copy files.
After that, I decided to try some commercially pressed CDs. First up was WinDVD, packaged with the GF3 I bought last year. I've installed it from this CD before just fine, however trying to install from the Liteon results in 'Y:\SETUP.EXE is not a valid Win32 application.' Next I try a Microsoft Office 2000 Pro CD that I'm also certain works - same error while trying to run setup.exe. Neverwinter Nights - same thing.
Now the thing is, there are a handful of files that it can read from CDs. I found a few .jpgs from the vacation pics CD that would actually open, and they would also copy without error. txt/ini files from various CDs seem to work, as do .html files. I had .cab files work from the Neverwinter Nights CD, but not .doc files. One .bmp file gave a 'An error has occured while trying to read from the file.' from the NWN CD, but the other 4 bitmaps work fine. The one thing that's been consistent so far is the inability to run executables.
I'm running Win2k SP2. The Liteon is jumpered for master and is set up as master on the secondary IDE channel. I've tried moving it to the primary IDE channel with no avail. Switching IDE cables didn't help either.
Does anyone have any insight as to what may be causing this to happen? Is my drive borked? I'm about ready to pack this thing back up and have Dell send me another one.
