When my hair was long, like shoulder length, I used to lose a lot of hair every day, clog up the drain in the tub, etc. This was in my 20's and I thought I was balding.

When I cut it short, I rarely see any hairs anymore, so if you have long hair, it could just be tangled hairs or hairs being pulled while you sleep.

I am 31 now and thankfully have all my hair, cuz I am an ugly as mofo already. If I lost my hair, my life would be over. :(

I had that problem before, thank goodness it grew back. It was all because I was stressed. Go to the doctor.

I suggest you visit a forum on www.hairlosshelp.com before asking a bunch of computer geeks about this. Heres some info I have gained.

#1, products like rogaine (which contain minoxidil) are something you have to take for the rest of your life or you lose the benefits. On top of that, many users have reported increased hair growth on other parts of your body.

#2 products like propecia (which contain finasteride I believe) have proven ot only be effective for approximately 5 years. Some users report gyno type problems.

#3 Laser combs are iffy on effectiveness. Some people report some growth, a lot do not. Studies have shown favorable and unfavorable results. Still up in the air.

Regardless, any chemicals that you put into or on your body will have side effects. You need to read up and know what these side effects may be. One thing that I would advise, is to get some nizoral shampoo. Basically every hairloss regimen I have ever heard of, uses nizoral. Some people report that nizoral does dry their hair too much, but just stick to the 2x a week usage and you shoudl be fine. If you get all red in the head...then you may want to stop using it. Its active ingredient keta@#$@##@ has no reported side effects, and from what i have read your body does not eventually immunize itself from it. It helps to remove the oils from your scalp, which contain the DHT.

*Note, Im not a doctor. This is just the info I have picked up on the subject. I had problems with an itchy scalp and hairloss at my temples. Nizoral fixed that for me, and seems to have at least slowed down my hairloss. Though I am still progressing, I dont feel like taking stronger meds to fight something thats inevitable anyway. Also, I am not a nizoral spokesman, just love the product. Only thing that has cured an itchy flaky scalp for me. None of the regular dandruff shampoos did anything for me in that respect.

**EDIT BTW, diet...masturbation...has no affect whatsoever on hairloss. Dont believe that nonsense. Sure, if you are starving yourself, eventually you are going to have hairloss, but that type is reversible. DHT induced hairloss is not going to reverse or start because you are eating improperly, or fapping. Its genetics, plain and simple.

same here. My dad was bald, his dad was bald. My uncle is bad too. Its me or my brother now. and I'm gonna shave my head before it gets too thin.

Andre Agassi made the shave/bald look work. so have countless others.

err, you do realize that baldness is inherited from the mother?

Re-make this thread when you're losing more than 0.000000000684% of your hair per night.

So are you basing this off what your mother told you? Please, name your source for this finding. AFAIK, nobody in this decade points to the genes that cause individuals to be predetermined for hairloss. This is just another myth about hairloss. http://www.bernsteinmedical.com/hair-loss/men-cause.php While this document states that the mother's side may appear to be more of an influence, nobody knows whats causing it yet.

I started losing more hair than usual when I was on Atkins. When I started eating more... ahem... healthily, it went back to normal.

 Then you were doing your version of Atkins and not the proper form of Atkins. I had hundreds of clientele come into my nutrition store and the ones having problems invariably were not doing the diet but some ridiculous bastardized form of it with their own stuff. If done correctly the Atkins diet will not make you lose hair unless you had a problem digesting vegetables, fruits, meats and nuts  . Also invariably people were still doing twenty carbs a day two months in instead of following the diet's increased carbohydrate plan after two weeks.

From a nutritional standpoint you could also increase your B-vitamins (take a good one or two a day) and/or take Silica or a hair supplement formula to help strengthen the hair itself. The shampoos others have suggested is the way to go for slowing down balding.

I've been using one of these for about a year. It has definately slowed my hair loss, and for some reason, has given my hair more body. My hair is about to the middle of my back and makes the results much more noticeable.

I'm 22, and I was starting to get kind of worried because lately when I run my hands through my hair, if I look at my hands afterward I would have a few strands of hair in my hands. This has never happened to me before. I then purchased some Vitamins, mainly for body building purposes, but I have noticed since I started taking the Vitamins that my hair doesn't leave traces in my hands when I run them through it.

I thought the last poster was talking about his hairy back

Definitely don't wear a ballcap. It will put stress on the roots of your hair, especially at the front "corners" of your hairline, causing them to break easily (DHT affected hair becomes brittle and thinner as it dies off). This will cause you to recede in the "power alleys" up front faster. It also supposedly makes the hair on the crown less healthy, which will speed up loss there as well.

Even the best drug results will only make you grow peach fuzz on your crown and nothing up front. Just cut your hair very short or shave it and don't be self concious about it. It's not ideal, but you'll live, and (non shallow) women won't care if you are confident, and relaxed about how you look (and then there's that whole personality thing, which is much more important).

help please.

Research, but typically hair falls out due to DHT (a more androgenic metabolite of testosterone) buildup around the hair follicle.

This can be dealt with in several ways.

To begin, I suggest buying Nioxin shampoo and cleanser (this will wash DHT from the scalp amongst other helpful things) and 5% minoxidil, which you should apply on the front and crown of your head

Minoxidil is Rogaine, right?

Yes, generic minoxidil is cheaper, 20 bucks at Sams/Cosco for a 4 month supply, though I suggest applying generously

I have a friend back in Italy and his entire family has been hairdressers since the early 1900s and when I asked them about it, they say the short hair thing is a myth. You just have to wash it very nice and clean at least once a day.
