last year I took a required course and got a C in it...I needed to retake it to get my in major GPA high enough (this is in a grad school)...I retook it and got a B

now while my in major GPA doesnt count the C, my total GPA does...so now my total GPA is .002 away from what it needs to be...so i need to get an A in my current class...if I get an A- i cant graduate...if i didnt have that C i would just need a B+ which i will have no problem getting

i didnt know that the old grade still counts unless you get a C- originally. If I had a C- i would be fine and coasting to graduation.

EDIT:

Do you think a prof. would get mad or think you are trying to cheat the system if you asked them to go back and lower your grade? i guess it cant hurt trying though, im not in their class anymore.

how does doing bad in a class help you towards your graduation.

i would think that since you got the B the second time, that would make it so you don't have to get as high in your current class.

i'm confused.

The B only override the required class GPA...when writing down my required classes i only put that i got a B...

on the other hand improving your grade in a class on your transcript only occurs if you got a C- or below the first time

The B didn't replace the C...if the C had been a C- it would have.

When I was going to berkeley, we had the same sort of stupid deal. If you took a class and got a D, you could retake it and your D would disappear. If you got a C- the first time (or even a D+, I don't remember) and retook it, the C- would still apear in your GPA.

Makes no sense to me...

Lesson to be learned: If you do really really bad just try and get a D- so you can retake the class.

If you're that close to the GPA you need, I'm sure it's something that can be negotiable. Talk to an advisor.

What is he going to do if he gets pissed? Raise your grade?

Lol, very true. I dought you have even though I do n't know you, but have you kept any papers/tests from that grading period? You could show him and tell him that after y ou reviewed some old tests, you found an error in grading and that you always do the right thing, and lowering your grade is just another one.

At my school, if you make a D your grade is replaced while a C is not. I have known a couple of people that asked the prof to lower their grade and they didn't have a problem with it. I believe the chairperson can do it as well if the prof says no.

Wow, at my school all grades count... even if you got an F, and retook the course... the F is calculated.

They do that so they can discourage people from taking classes a million times, overcrowding them, and preventing other people from taking that class, stay at the school longer taking up precious space.

It takes money....no one likes to retake classes.....
to discourage people from taking up precious space, it would make more sense to charge more tuition per credit for retaked classes than making people try to get a D.....then they would have resource to open up more space for people who really need to attend that class.....

I think they have other ways to discourage people staying to long. At cal (at least in engineering) you had to petition the dean's office to stay longer than 4 years. I assume they would deny you if you took the class 6 times in a row.

If you ask me, they shouldn't allow you to "erase" your score no matter what. If you got a D then you retake the class and get a B, that D damn well should stay on your transcript; you earned it. It's unfair to those who got a B by working harder on their frist try.

well at most schools...they put a mark there that says retook the class...or leave the original grade on the transcript and just count the new one for the GPA

your school should not have let you retake that class. At my shool no class can be repeated unless u got an C- or worse. This is to prevent people from retaking a class to get an A if they got a B or whatever.

I don't think your professor will like the idea of lowering your grade, and I think you should not ask either since technically u will be committing academic fraud.
