The CEO of my company (65K employees) just walked by my desk. He said hello to me and I just said "what's up?" and kind of blew him off.

I didn't realize who he was until he talked to someone else and introduced himself. I've never seen him before and his office is in Canada so I never expected him here.

Haha... I always say "Hello!" cheerily when someone I don't know says hi. Best case, I impress someone important, worst case, I make people think I'm a nut, which I am, so I come out even.

at least you did not say something like "the nipples on the secretary are up, thats whats up. The cheap a$$ ceo is too cheap to turn up the heat." Then you would have had problems.

I always say "Good morning!" to anyone, whether I know them or not, and regardless of the time of day. People who know me just laugh and say good morning back, and people I don't know get all confused and thus a conversation is started.
