DOH!: I FRIED my poweredge 400sc (p4 2.8 ) today!!

I had the box open because i was switching drives around so i can boot gentoo as a master. Anyway I decided to rest my feet on top of the box. I didnt realize that the snow on my shoes was melting and DRIPPING inside of the case. Once the screen went white/green with crazy patterns and when the machine locked up i went to investigate:

There was a puddle of water sitting on the videocard PCB and watter was dripping from the PS cables. After hard reset (pull the batter cable), the machine wouldnt boot up anymore. I removed all pci cards/ memory/ CMOS batt and let it dry for an hour. I tried again the machine would only beep after i plugged the powercable in (it didnt care about the powerbuttons🙂 ).

But yeah dell is overnighting me new mobo/cpu/ram. I just hope that the videocard is ok (fx5600)...

I never put my feet on my case with shoes!

What is the story you fed dell?

This is what I want to know too. But dell is rather generous. My company had a laptop which had a Hard Drive password on it, so nothing could open it. They just sent us a new drive, even though it's our fault. And I even told them the whole story.

reminds me of the time one of my users dropped his laptop and cracked the screen. the warrenty excludes cracked screens.

but i called anyway and said i had a video problem 😛

they sent a tech the next day and since he was there already with the part, and it was easy to swap out the lcd screen, he did it. i said thanks and gave him a beer. 🙂

wooo the videocard works! yay

there was about 1 in diameter puddle of watter sitting on it... i jsut tested it in another machine and it works!!!

and i told dell that it stopped working... which it did🙂

wooo,
i got it working!!!
it turns out i only fried one of the memory banks. Once i moved the ram over, it worked fine. YAY
