So it IS true, the AMD core can be taken out fairly easily 🙁
I just got my replacement AMD KT7A (1.1 instead of 1.0) but my thermoengine never has quite fit properly due to the massive capacitors.
Anyhow while installing the HSF, I guess I was just a tiny bit too rough (I've done this like 100 times before) 🙁 and click off the corner went.
AMD really should do something about this, so many AMD cpu's seem to blow up due to weakness in the CPU's - it's the one thing I'll say for intel is most of their CPU's are indestructable (Within reason of course)
So I think ok,... I'll get an Athlon XP 1.33 (1500+) unlock it and overclock it to 1.53 or even 1.6
However today I saw on these forums
http://www.icronticforums.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=1
That the KT7A won't work with the XP unless it's a 1.3 revision (also saw it here on anandtech)
I hope there's some kind of new flash that can be done for this board, considering mine is 5 months old and comes with "special 3 phase power to ensure the board lasts a long time!" (cough, thanks Abit)
I specifically got the KT7A because Abit did so well with the BH6 (bios flashes all the way up to SS like almost 18 months after the boards release) and it took a P3-800 (officially) which isn't bad for a board released when the C300A was the king, I would have liked ABIT to keep up the tradition 🙁
So now I'm stuck with a non XP compatible board, SDRAM still, and a dead 1.0 AXIA (did 1.4 fine)
I think it's time I gave up computers 🙂
