All of these responses and nobody asks what vehicle?

I wouldn't slam a screwdriver through the oil filter/filter housing on my VW GTI!
Why not? The filter is exposed and will be tossed, as long as you jam the screwdriver in a safe way there shouldn't be any harm. Even if you have a luxury GTI.

...oooooorrrrr he could go get another $4.95 filter wrench.....

What happens if he still can't get it with the screwdriver in it?

tighten it with a filter wrench

That is the reason it will not come off. You should only put a screw on filter by hand.

RTFM.....An oil filter should be hand tightened until the rubber ring on the filter makes contact with the metal base, then it should be tightened a 1/4 turn. For some of you pvssies that may require a filter wrench. You ever wonder why those little arrows are on the filter?

Had that happen to me once, didn't want to restart motor w/old filter in place to go buy a new wrench so
I wiped it off and cut a piece of sandpaper to wrap around the filter, then grabbed it with a small rag in my
hand, gave me enough grip to get it off.
