I was also curious what research they were used in. A lot of people who go against animal research aren't really aware of what advances came from it. It's the yardstick in what determines viability in a lot of clinical trials.

Having a large prison population doesn't make them good testing subjects. Prisoners aren't generally in the best shape & prison has a lot of infection thrown around, hepatitis comes to mind. Plus the consent part has additional considerations. You can bet that some sort of research is being done in prisons, but considering it as a replacement for animal research, even an adequate one; is wishful thinking. I'm also against all the cosmetic testing, but at the same time not all research being conducted is inhumane--contrary to what PETA trolls would have you believe.

Ok, I know I'm being emotionally yanked and all, but about 2/3rd's of the way through I admit I was beginning to tear up.

In my experience, beagles are especially sensitive to how they are treated, even among dogs.
Agreed, I used to keep beagles and they are very sensitive, as well as being very dumb. They are also animals that are very scent-oriented, so keeping them in a lab environment seems especially cruel. I didn't like even keeping them in large pens, although they are so dumb that they are often hit by cars (or tractors) if allowed to roam free even on farms. Good dogs for house dogs.

I don't have enough expertise to know whether medical research on dogs is ever truly necessary, but it's very sad. I think that these dogs had obviously experienced human contact and kindness, because they went to the people rather than trying to avoid them. Cosmetics, though, is a different story. No one really needs a new mascara, so if you want to make more money by developing one, choose your ingredients with care and hire your human testers.

I'd call them more stubborn and instinct-driven than dumb. Just look into a beagle's eyes. There's definitely something happening there, on a relative, species-specific level . . . a kind of dog-level "why am I here and who is this biped with all the treats and rules?" as opposed to a more simple "see the ball, fetch the ball, OMG IS THAT FOOD!?"

The cheesy sappy music was an obvious "hook" to the viewers to tug at the heart strings. So contrived.
