Dogs Kill 13 Cats at Animal Shelter

MustISO

Lifer
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Two pit bull dogs that may have wandered inside a shelter for sick animals killed 13 cats, authorities said.

Lee Esada, whose wife, Heather, manages the Southport-Oak Island Animal Rescue, found the dead cats early Friday and then found the dogs sleeping in a cage in the back of the shelter.

"I was so shaken up I could barely pick up the phone to call somebody," Esada said. "I've never been through anything like this before."

Richard Cooper, director of Brunswick County Animal Services, said there's no evidence of foul play. The dogs could have pushed through a hole in the chain-link fence surrounding the shelter and come inside the building through the cat door. The shelter housed about 75 sick cats.

The dogs, one weighing 60 pounds and the other 40 pounds, were in custody of animal services Friday night.

The owner of the dogs was cited for creating a public nuisance and allowing the dogs to run at-large. Authorities declined to release his name.

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Department planned to continue investigating.

Good. Cats are teh debbil.

I was kidding, but I hope you understand why I am not too terribly shaken up about this. Especially considering the fact that the cats didn't belong to anybody.

I think this thread is going to be linked in all the cat-vs-dog threads.

The thing I think the national news left out, I am from Wilmingotn NC, is that the cats were in cages. So someone let the dogs in and then opened the cat cages and then pulled them out from what I have heard in local reports. So someone might have taken the dogs??? and put them in there just to watch them kill cats.

So it is still early to really point fingers yet.

Local story

"A few of the cats found dead on the floor were in a latched cage; just one of the reasons why shelter workers say someone must have let the dogs inside the cattery.

"The dogs would have had to unlatch the cage, push back the door, and take the cat out," Spinso says. "Those cats were targeted. Absolutely," Spinso says. Targeted because someone may have seen them as a health threat. "
