I'm looking to adopt a dog... but many tell me bitches have far better temperament.

Bastards are usually always neutered right? I hear they're batshit crazy if they're not because of hormones. Is that true? Sounds inhumane to alter the personality.

What do you think?

All dogs that aren't fixed are going to be crazy cus of their hormones. Doesn't matter if it's male or female. I personally prefer male dogs.

If neutered/fixed, gender doesn't really determine temperament. Temperament is more breed specific.

And neutering/spaying does not affect the dog's personality.

Think of it like this: do you think a human is going to act the same if their reproductive organs (i.e. the source of sexual hormones) are cut out?

However, it does typically mean removal of the desire to breed, which in animals can lead to undesirable behavior if seeking to keep inside of the home. Think of it like caging a human but giving them access to all of your belongings, as well as free access to the door. Suffice it to say, such a human might be more "trainable" if they have low sexual hormones (look to teenagers).

Also, the big gain, at least for bitches, is the dog won't enter heat. Heat is messy, and not something I'd recommend for an in-home pet. ;)

First of all, bastard does not mean what you think it does. It is not the male dog equivalent of bitch.

Secondly, male dogs are not "batshit crazy" if not neutered.

Thirdly, it is not particularly inhumane to neuter or spay a dog. In many ways, in fact, quite the opposite, as, for instance, unspayed female dogs are prone to more medical complications as they get older.

Which leads me to:

... neutering/spaying does not affect the dog's personality.

Not true for males. If neutered before maturity, most males will be FAR less aggressive towards other adult male dogs due to the lack of that hormone fueled sexual aggression/contention/dominance factor.

So, yes, neutering can and does fundamentally affect a male dog's behavior, and thus does affect his "personality."

However, this below is generally quite true:

...gender doesn't really determine temperament. Temperament is more breed specific.

All the shelters I've been to refuse to let you adopt a dog unless its been fixed.

Personally, it's more important to find the dog that matches you than one of a specific gender. Dog have their own personality, you need to find one that fits yours.

Go to a few shelters and play with some of the dogs. Don't feel like you need to get a dog the first day you start looking, it took us a few weekends of looking around when we wanted a dog but we finally found the dog that is perfect for us.

I like females for the fact that they won't try to randomly hump things and they won't cock their leg and piss on the side of your house/car/mailbox/ect.

Actually not totally true- esp. before sexual maturity, humping is more a sign of dominance than anything else= trust me I was totally caught off gaurd when my little 3 month old golden retriever girl started humping my mom's dog till I googled it =)

Speaking of humping...

I'm debating uploading to youtube a video shot of our little min-pin with our great pyrenees. She came into heat the other day. He went nuts trying to mate with her. Thing is, I don't think he's even 10 pounds, she's 130 or so. He was standing on the back of a chair, with her backed up to him & he still wasn't quite reaching. It was cute.

They will figure out a way get them both fixed.

As for male vs female it doesn't really matter. Just find one with a good personality and don't worry about what sex it is.
