My roomates and i had a discussion bout this a few months ago on this, and recently i was flipping channels and i decided i would watch..
Whats the point of it?, Put a dog on display, make them walk around, obey simple commands...?

I am not a pet owner but, just seems pointless to put your dog through that, surely the pet doesnt know whats goin on.

does anyone else think the owners are living their dreams through their dog?

I am not bashing pets or dogs or anything, i just dont understand the point of a dog show

They don't make sense, and most of the people involved with them are freaks. Watch Best In Show. Hilarious movie.

Rich people spend $5K on a Purebreed, certified dog. Then spend $5K training it, $5K feeding it and $5K in AKC/entry fees. They want to show off their investment.

It's a brag-fest, that's all it is. It's like a LAN party, except the cases have feet and can bark.

I've never seen a dog that can render in real time.

Man....you've just been all over Oklahoma this week Red. I think deep down you long to live here. It's ok.....go ahead and admit to yourself that you would like to live in a nice, slow paced, relaxed, beautiful(well on my side of the state), friendly, low cost of living, state. It's ok....we will accept you.

I guess it's for people who have nothing else to do because they're paying someone else to do it for them.

yeah basicly my friends gf shows dogs for other people... seems like all she does is take care of them, and then walks them around a circle at shows. other than that they just make the house smell and suck money in the way of food etc

They don't make sense because of your limited knowledge of breeding purebred Dogs. Dog shows are important in order to maintain the integrity of dog breeds. Where I live, there are many championship breeders of hunting dogs such as German Shorthaired pointer,Chocolate Labs,Wiemaraners and so on.

Each on of these breeds have very distinguishing characteristics which earmark the breeds.

I have a buddy who paid 5,000 for his Vizla pup he got from a breeder in Yogoslavia. I personally never saw a better hunting dog in action.

Excellent analogy

Actually, I do understand the way they work technically. It just seems assinine to me that there's a panel of self-appointed "experts" who feel they alone have the ability to determine what constitutes a breed.

Most of the judges have 30+ years of experience and they were trained by Former Judges so they can maintain the continuity of the breeds.

I don't doubt their experience, I only question the ability of a select few stating what is or is not a breed.

I guess I just see dogs as companions and not biological science projects. Dog shows are basically science fairs with live subjects.

And the funny part is, the mutt you adopted from the pound for $50 is generally more healthy, and easier to train than the $1500 purebred with master bloodlines that your posh schmoozy neighbors next door bought.

I had a purebred Pug that had AKC parentage, but it still wouldn't have won a dog show. It didn't have the "ideal" Pug nose. Even with the perfect parents you can't get perfect breeding. It's still somewhat up to chance. So dog shows are about breeding "perfect" specimens often enough to get a good one and discarding the "rejects".

Personally I think dog shows have gotten way out of hand and the dogs are too overbred. Unfortunately this causes alot of dogs to be discarded because they are not the "perfect" specimine of the breed. Bah! If i'm even slightly correct in my assumption, that means quite a few dogs, probably thousands, are put down. That's just stupid in my opinion.

Mine can render output in real time...as a matter of fact, she just rendered something in the backyard. :p

it is hilarious because IT'S TRUE.

i work with 4 people who do dog shows. according to them, the shows provide an outlet to certain people with creative impulses, if you know what i mean.

My wife and I went to a show not too long ago. If anything I thought of it as a great chance to see lots and lots of dogs and what different breeds look like. I almost went out a bought a "real" sheep dog because I saw one for real.
